By the Numbers: UFC 316
There’s a sense of inevitability when Merab Dvalishvili fights.
While Sean O'Malley seemed to have improved on some of the weaknesses he displayed in their first meeting, it still wasn’t nearly enough, as Dvalishvili broke his opponent down to secure a third-round submission victory in the UFC 316 headliner at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday night. It’s Dvalishvili’s first submission triumph since 2017, and he’s making a serious case to be considered as the bantamweight GOAT based on his current run.

13: Consecutive victories for Dvalishvili (12 at bantamweight). That’s tied for the fourth-longest in UFC history, regardless of weight class.
5: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts for Dvalishvili. In the first
meeting with O’Malley, “The Machine” landed six of 15 takedowns in
a 25-minute affair. On Saturday, the champ got stronger as the
fight progressed, landing three of his final four attempts in the
decisive third frame.
141: Total strikes landed by Dvalishvili. By comparison, O’Malley landed 38. Dvalishvili outlanded his adversary 48 to 16 in Round 1, 24 to 19 in Round 2 and 69 to 3 in Round 3. “The Machine” also held a 52-to-31 edge in significant strikes landed.
1,351: Days since Dvalishvili’s last finish in the Octagon, a second-round TKO of Marlon Moraes at UFC 266 on Sept. 25, 2021. During his current 13-bout winning streak, 11 of the Georgian’s triumphs have gone the distance.
2: Olympic gold medalists to win UFC championships. With her second-round submission of Julianna Pena in the co-main event, Kayla Harrison joins Henry Cejudo as the only athletes to accomplish this feat.
7: Women’s bantamweight champions in UFC history. Harrison joins Pena, Amanda Nunes, Holly Holm, Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey and Raquel Pennington on the list of females to have held 135-pound gold.
30: Significant strikes landed by Harrison. Pena, meanwhile landed just nine. The American Top Team product also held a 59-to-15 edge in total strikes, landed two of three takedowns and logged 6:05 of control time.
2: Knockdowns landed by Joe Pyfer in the opening stanza of a unanimous decision triumph over Kelvin Gastelum at middleweight.
8: Consecutive victories for Mario Bautista, the third longest winning streak in UFC bantamweight history behind only Merab Dvalishvili (12) and Aljamain Sterling (nine). Bautista took a three-round verdict over ex-Bellator champ Patrick Mix in a featured 135-pound contest on Saturday.
173: Significant strikes landed by Bautista, the eighth most ever in a single UFC bantamweight bout and the fourth most in a three-round fight at 135 pounds. By comparison, Mix landed 122.
58: Significant body strikes landed by Bautista. Mix, meanwhile, landed 14. That was Bautista’s biggest advantage in any single area in the fight.
4,347: Days since Vicente Luque’s last submission defeat, which came via arm-triangle choke against Carlos Alexandre Pereira at Smash Fight 2 on July 13, 2013. At UFC 316, Luque succumbed to a Kevin Holland brabo choke at the 1:03 mark of Round 2 in a welterweight bout.
3: Knockdowns landed by Joshua Van in a third-round technical knockout victory over Bruno “Bulldog” Silva. Van is the sixth flyweight in UFC history to have three knockdowns in a single fight.

4: Consecutive victories for Van, tying him with Andre Lima for the second longest active winning treak in the UFC at 125 pounds. Reigning champ Alexandre Pantoja is first with seven straight triumphs.
125: Significant strikes landed by Van, the fifth time during his promotional tenure that he has hit triple figures in that category. That ties him with Brandon Moreno for the most fights with 100+ significant strikes at 125 pounds.
5: Consecutive fights with a knockdown for Azamat Murzakanov, who floored Brendson Ribeiro en route to a technical knockout victory at the 3:25 mark of Round 1 of their light heavyweight showdown. Murzakanov is tied with Ilia Topuria for the longest active knockdown streak in the UFC. Additionally, Murzakanov’s five consecutive triumphs are the second-longest active winning streak at 205 pounds behind only Carlos Ulberg (eight).
10: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 13 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the heavyweight bout between Sergei Spivac and Waldo Cortes-Acosta in favor of Spivac. However, cageside judges Jon Bilyk, Munah Querido and Tony Tamburrino all submitted tallies for Cortes-Acosta to give him a unanimous decision triumph.
110: Significant strikes landed by Cortes-Acosta. Spivac, meanwhile, landed 48. The Dominican outlanded his foe 27 to 14 in Round 1, 36 to 18 in Round 2 and 47 to 16 in Round 3.
5: Consecutive victories for Cortes-Acosta, the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
52: Significant clinch strikes for Andreas Gustafsson in a unanimous decision win over Kalinn Williams at welterweight. By comparison, “Khaos” landed just 13. Gustafsson held a 98-to-39 overall advantage in significant strikes, landed eight of 14 takedowns and logged 9:34 of control time in a dominant victory.
.640: Significant striking accuracy for Cong Wang, who landed 143 of 222 attempts in a unanimous decision triumph over Ariane Lipski da Silva. Her Brazilian foe was far less accurate, landing 63 of 176 significant strikes — a 35% clip.
0:28: Time of Joo Sang Yoo’s first-round knockout of Jeka Saragih, the fourth-fastest finish for a debuting featherweight in promotion history. That’s still 21 seconds short of the fastest KO ever at featherweight, a record owned by Yoo’s mentor, Chan Sung Jung. “The Korean Zombie” dispatched Mark Hominick in seven seconds at UFC 140.
23: Takedowns attempted by Quillan Salkilld against Yanal Ashmouz, the sixth most ever in a single UFC lightweight bout. Salkilld landed eight of those tries en route to a unanimous decision triumph.
31: Significant leg strikes landed by MarQuel Mederos in a unanimous decision triumph against Mark Choinski at lightweight. By comparison, Choinski landed just 3. Mederos sent his foe to the canvas multiple times with low kicks during the bout, though he was only credited with one official knockdown.
